I’ve always been fascinated with the ocean. As a child, we would go to the beach in California every year. I delighted in collecting items from the shore and adorning my body with them. I used large strings of sea kelp as my hair and as a “feather” boa to drape across my arms like some kind of fabulous ancient sea witch, the seashells as my jewels. The sun and salt left my skin feeling true to me somehow like I was meant to be that way, and I believe I am. Salt resonates with our bodies and souls uniquely. Over time I understood that salt’s healing powers come from its energetic vibration. When I soak in a salt bath and lower my ears down beneath the water, I hear the vibration pulsating. It revealed that it held the memories of time, not just here on this earth but before and beyond. This aligns with the term “Salt of the Earth.”

Looking back, I notice my mother must have also had a connection with the ocean. She had a beautiful mirror, encrusted with a design made of shells for the frame. Next to the bathtub was a very large iridescent abalone shell along with impressive mussel shells that reflected purples and greens like they had been painted with the northern lights. I called them “lady fingers” and until just a couple of years ago thought that’s what they were called. I’ve got to say I’m not embarrassed. I like my version better. The soap dish was actually a large lion’s paw scallop that I have to this day next to my tub. It’s the one I used when I painted this piece. This is my offering to you- the shimmer of my sea witch magic, childhood memories on the shore, and the unexpected inherited gift from my mother encompassed in this piece and hanging in your very own home.
