The Beauty of Letting Go:
Lessons from Autumn

OCTOBER 1, 2024

Hello, I'm BROOKE
From working with adults to working with kids, and 30+ years of watercolor, I’ve learned a thing or two. I’m excited to share them with you here. Some topics are art-related, some are geared toward helping your kiddos out, and some are just straight-up soul-searching rambles. Stick around and let’s create something new together.

There’s so much more to explore!

As autumn quietly settles in, I find myself reflecting on the changes that come with this season. Living in the mountains of Utah, in a little town called Midway, I’ve noticed the crispness in the air and the deer in my backyard, happily feasting on the apples from our tree. There’s something magical about this time of year.

With a steaming cup of chai in hand, I’ve been online shopping for my first pair of UGGS (yes, I’m a little behind the trend!). Having not lived in the snow for a while, I think my toes will appreciate the warmth. But as I sit here, watching the leaves turn and fall, I’m reminded of the cycles of life. Just like the leaves, we too must shed parts of ourselves to make way for new growth.

The transformation of a leaf is both beautiful and profound. As it changes color and falls to the ground, it’s letting go of its previous life — completing a cycle and preparing for a fresh start next year. And so must we. Autumn teaches us the beauty of letting go. Instead of clinging to the past as a lifeline to the future, we must be willing to shed what no longer serves us, even if it’s uncomfortable.

But how do we know what to let go of? What should we keep, and what do we reach for?

Take a moment to look at where you feel stuck and where you thrive. What weighs you down? What used to light you up but now feels more like a burden? Sometimes, the things we once considered "success" no longer fulfill us. And here’s a secret: only YOU get to define what success means for you. It’s an inside job, and no one else can determine that for you.

For me, success meant quitting my 9-5 and diving headfirst into my own business. I had to acknowledge my fears, thank them for keeping me safe in the past, and then let them go. It’s scary, but staying safe and certain is no longer an option for me. I’ve chosen to walk into the unknown because that’s where true creation happens. No more going around in circles. The merry-go-round isn’t fun anymore.

So, what are you holding onto that no longer serves you? What disguises itself as success but feels hollow? Remember, you’re not a sheep following the herd. You’re a wolf: wild, bold, and a little fierce. Live like that. Carve out your own path.

What are you waiting for? The time to let go is now.
